The first day of competition at the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games features 32 medals and action in 12 of the 15 sports.

Here is what has happened so far.

Boccia

Brazil won two of the three gold medals on the first day of boccia with victory in the BC1/BC2 team event and BC4 pairs. Canada topped the podium in the BC3 pairs.

Cycling road

Canada’s first gold of the Games was won in the men’s road race thanks to Mark Ledo in the men’s H3-5 class.

It was the USA who dominated however with three gold medals. William Groux beat teammate Brian Sheridan by just two seconds in the mixed H1-2 class, Samantha Heinrich topped the podium in the women's C1-5 class and Joseph Berenyi claimed victory in the men's C1-3 race.

The Colombian duo of Nestor Ayala and Nelson Serna took gold in the T1-2 and B classes respectively.

Powerlifting

Cuba’s Leydis Rodriguez (77.0kg / 90.49 points) won the first powerlifting gold of Toronto 2015 with victory in the women’s up to 41kg and 45kg class. She also set added 17kg to her own Americas record. A Parapan Games record lift of 73.0kg/ was enough for Brazil to win their first gold of the Games courtesy of Maria Rizonaide in the women’s up to 50kg class. Jorge Carinao Cárdenas (148.0kg/166.40 points) won Chile's first gold medal in the men's combined up to 49kg and 54kg class with an Americas record.

Swimming

Mexico made a great start to the swimming competition winning 14 medals, including seven golds from 16 events. Nely Miranda led the winning two golds, and setting a new world record over 50m freestyle S4 and a new Americas record over 100m freestyle S4.

Non-medal events

Football 5

Argentina, silver medallists at the 2014 World Championships, made a winning start with a 6-0 win over Uruguay. Multi-world and Paralympic champions showed they will be hard to beat after they scored six past Chile without reply.

Football 7

World bronze medallists Brazil showed why they are the team to beat with a 7-0 thrashing of Venezuela. Wesley Martins de Souza and Jonatas Santos Machado both scored two goals each. Argentina beat hosts Canada 3-1.

Goalball

The men’s competition opened up with a 13-3 victory for Venezuela over Peru. World champions Brazil beat rivals Argentina 11-6 and hosts Canada edged USA in a thriller 5-4.

Guatemala’s enjoyed a 10-4 victory over Nicaragua in the opening game of the women's competition. World champions USA thumped El Salvador 10-0 and in the final game of the day Brazil beat Canada 3-1.

Sitting Volleyball

The USA opened up the men's competition with a 3-0 victory over Colombia and Canada beat Costa Rica by the same scoreline. Brazil also beat Mexico 3-0.

Wheelchair basketball

In the opening games of the men's competition, Argentina beat Mexico 65-50 and Brazil thumped Puerto Rico 114-40. Defending champions USA were comfortable 70-42 winners over Colombia, a repeat of the 2011 final. Women's world champions Canada thrashed Guatemala 78-18. Finally, London 2012 Paralympic champions on the men's side Canada thumped Venezuela 102-27.

Brazil's women defeated Mexico 58-31.

Wheelchair rugby

World and Paralympic silver medallists Canada started their campaign for Parapan gold beating Brazil 65-32. USA, who are determined to beat Canada on home soil, warmed-up with a convincing 70-25 win over Argentina. Finally Chile, competing in one of their first international competitions lost 66-12 to Colombia.
