…tickets were sold, making Latin America’s first Paralympic Games the second biggest ever in this regard, only behind London 2012. The Barra Olympic Park received a record number of visitors on 10 September (170,000), to take the crown for the busiest day at the park since it opened in July.

…countries made their Paralympic debut: Aruba, Congo, Malawi, Somalia, Sao Tome & Principe and Tonga.

…consecutive times China finished top of the Paralympic medals table after ending first at Rio 2016. The Asian country rounded off September’s Games with 239 medals -107 golds, 81 silvers and 51 bronzes-.

…world records were set, making this the best Games ever in terms of athletic performance. Amongst the most outstanding ones, Iran’s Siamand Rahman broke the 300kg barrier in the men’s over 107kg, becoming the first powerlifter to do so after clearing the bar at 310kg. Cuba’s sprinter Omara Durand confirmed she is the fastest female Paralympian, lowering two world records in the women’s 100m and 400m T12. And USA’s swimmer Bradley Snyder took down the 30-year-old men’s 100m freestyle S11 world record. Also, 432 Paralympic Games records were broken.

…female athletes competed in Rio, a record number which doubled the one from Atlanta 1996. In total, 4,333 athletes from 159 countries, plus the Independent Paralympic Athletes team, took part in 528 medal events.

…medals, six golds and one bronze, were won by Belarus’ swimmer Ihar Boki, who ended as Rio 2016’s most decorated Paralympian, followed by Ukraine’s swimmer Maksym Krypak and China’s swimmer Wenpan Huang.

…countries covered the Games by television, radio and online outlets. Also, the IPC website showed live coverage of 13 sports and live results from the 22 sports, and the IPC’s digital media activities engaged close to one billion people.

…metres high is Iran’s sitting volleyball player Morteza Mehrzadselakjani, the tallest Paralympian in history. The 29-year-old was instrumental in helping his country seal its sixth Paralympic gold in the sport, reclaiming the title it had lost to Bosnia & Herzegovina four years ago, in London.

…sports, canoe and triathlon, made their Paralympic debut. Great Britain’s Jeanette Chippington took canoe’s first gold medal ever in the women’s KL1, whilst Germany’s Martin Schulz topped triathlon’s first Paralympic podium in the men’s PT4. A total of 22 sports were contested in Rio.

…countries won at least one medal, the most ever at a Paralympic Games. Kazakhstan, Georgia, Malaysia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam claimed their first golds in history; whilst Cape Verde, Mozambique, Qatar and Uganda made their first appearance on the Paralympic podium.
