The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has opened nominations for the highly prestigious IPC Scientific Award, which will be presented at September’s VISTA Conference in Toronto, Canada.

First presented in 2005, the biennial award recognises the work of one academic researcher for their contribution to research in the field of sports for persons with an impairment.

The award acknowledges and rewards the work of researchers and serves to promote and encourage further study and enhance the quality of work in this area.

Dr. Peter Van de Vliet, IPC Medical and Scientific Director, said: “The biennial Paralympic Scientific Award allows the Paralympic community to honour someone for their exceptional performance and contributions to the Paralympic Movement.

“Each edition, the quality of nominations improves massively and I am sure that this year’s winner will once again raise the bar in terms of research.”

In 2015 the award was presented to Professor Jennifer Mactavish in recognition of her role in the re-inclusion of athletes with an intellectual impairment into the Paralympic programme.

The Canadian, who is the Dean of the Yeates School of Graduate Studies at Ryerson University, served as the leading member of the joint IPC - International Sports Federation for Persons with an Intellectual Disability (INAS) Taskforce that provided the framework for the “Eligibility Classification Research” project.

This successful project eventually led to 120 intellectually impaired athletes competing at London 2012 after a 12 year absence in athletics, swimming and table tennis.

In addition to her research on intellectual impairment and classification, Mactavish has contributed to the scientific work in family life and stress coping mechanisms of individuals with an impairment.

IPC members, IPC Governing Board members, Sport Technical Committees, IPC Standing Committees and Councils can all submit nominations ahead of the deadline which is on Friday 24 February 2017 at 12:00 GMT.

The award will be presented at VISTA 2017 which will take place between 20-23 September 2017. It is organised through a partnership between the IPC, the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) and this year’s theme is “Opportunities, Challenges in Paralympic Sport Science & Sport Medicine Support.” The event will take place at the Chelsea Hotel and the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario.

Registration for VISTA, which is likely to attract around 300 of the world’s leading sports scientists, sport medicine practitioners, classifiers, coaches, athletes and sport administrators, is now open at www.vista2017.com.

Everyone booking before 15 June 2017 can take advantage of an early bird registration fee of CAD 400, which represents a 12.5 per cent discount on the listed price. Students can book their places for CAD 200 and all registering delegates can take advantage of a special discounted accommodation rate at the Chelsea Hotel.

The registration fee includes participation in all conference sessions, an invitation to the Opening Ceremony and an Evening of Interactive Learning and Scientific Celebration on 22 September. Also included are lunch and refreshments during breaks, and airport transfers to and from Pearson International Airport and the Chelsea Hotel.

Le Comité international paralympique ouvre les nominations pour le prix scientifique 2017

Le lauréat fera une allocution à la conférence VISTA, en septembre, à Toronto (Canada).

Le Comité international paralympique (CIP) a ouvert les nominations pour le très prestigieux prix scientifique CIP, qui sera remis à la conférence VISTA de septembre, à Toronto.

Présenté pour la première fois en 2005, le prix biennal récompense le travail d’un chercheur universitaire pour sa contribution à la recherche dans le domaine du sport pour les personnes avec un handicap.

Le prix reconnaît et récompense le travail de chercheurs et sert à promouvoir et à encourager la recherche tout en améliorant la qualité du travail dans ce domaine.

Le Dr Peter Van de Vliet, directeur médical et scientifique au CIP, affirme : « Le prix scientifique paralympique biennal permet à la communauté paralympique d’honorer quelqu’un pour sa performance exceptionnelle et ses contributions au mouvement paralympique.

La qualité des nominations s’améliore grandement à chaque édition, et je suis sûr que le lauréat de cette année haussera encore la barre en matière de recherche. »

En 2015, le prix a été remis à la professeure Jennifer Mactavish, en reconnaissance pour son rôle dans la réinsertion des athlètes avec un handicap intellectuel dans le programme paralympique.

La Canadienne, qui est doyenne à la Yeates School of Graduate Studies de l’Université Ryerson, a été un des principaux membres du groupe de travail conjoint CIP - Fédération sportive internationale pour les personnes avec un handicap intellectuel qui a fourni le cadre de travail pour le projet de « recherche sur la classification en matière d’admissibilité ».

Ce projet fructueux a eu comme résultat la participation de 120 athlètes handicapés intellectuellement aux Jeux de Londres en 2012, après une absence de 12 ans en athlétisme, en natation et en tennis de table.

En plus de sa recherche sur la déficience intellectuelle et la classification, Jennifer Mactavish a contribué aux travaux sur la vie de famille et les mécanismes de gestion du stress des personnes déficientes.

Les membres du CIP, les membres du conseil d’administration du CIP, les comités sportifs techniques, les comités permanents et les conseils du CIP peuvent soumettre leurs nominations avant la date limite du vendredi 24 février 2017 à 12 h, TMG.

Le prix sera présenté à VISTA 2017, qui aura lieu du 20 au 23 septembre 2017. VISTA 2017 est organisé par un partenariat entre le CIP, le Comité paralympique canadien (CPC) et l’Institut canadien du sport de l’Ontario (ICSO). Le thème de cette année est « Occasions et défis relatifs au soutien en matière de sciences et médecine du sport paralympique ». L’événement se tiendra à l’hôtel Chelsea et à l’Institut canadien du sport de l’Ontario.

L’inscription à VISTA, qui est susceptible d’attirer environ 300 des principaux scientifiques du sport, praticiens de la médecine sportive, classificateurs, entraîneurs, athlètes et administrateurs sportifs de la planète, est maintenant ouverte au www.vista2017.com.

Tous ceux qui s’inscrivent avant le 15 juin 2017 profiteront d’un tarif réduit de 400 $ CA, soit un rabais de 12,5 %. Le tarif d’inscription est de 200 $ CA pour les étudiants et tous les délégués inscrits profiteront d’un tarif réduit exceptionnel pour l’hébergement à l’hôtel Chelsea.
