    Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games open

    "This is the moment for you to show your enthusiasm and spirit of togetherness to the world."

    South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hung Won and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven were amongst the dignitaries on Saturday (18 October) who attended the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea.

    In a colourful laser light show and presentation which carried the theme “Impossible Drives Us”, the ceremony welcomed 2,500 athletes from 41 countries who will compete in 23 sports over the next seven days.

    In his welcoming speech, Asian Paralympic Committee President Dato Zainal Abu Zarin paid tribute to the South Korean Government for organising the event.

    "Here in Incheon, we will witness the magic of para-sporting action," he said.

    "Indeed, a wave of passion, begins now.

    "To be able to be here, to be among Asia's best, is a feat in itself.

    "The people of Incheon...we salute you for your deep passion, your continuous support towards this Games.

    "We can clearly see and feel your sincere passion and great dynamism.

    "This is the moment for you to show your enthusiasm and spirit of togetherness to the world."

    Following the opening proclamation by the Prime Minister, Incheon skies were filled with fireworks as the Para Games flame was lit by Korean sporting heroes.

    Earlier, the Incheon Asian Para Games Organising Committee (IAPGOC) Kim Sung IL paid tribute to all who were involved in the Games preparation which includes the hundreds of volunteers.

    Ahead of the Opening Ceremony, preliminary round games took place in men’s wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis where players took part in the round of 32.

    On Sunday, medals are up for grabs in athletics, track cycling, powerlifting, shooting, swimming, ten-pin bowling, wheelchair fencing.

    With 328 athletes, hosts Korea have the biggest team in Incheon, followed by Japan (301), China (229), Thailand (201) and Iran (202).
