Barra Olympic Park, heart of the Rio 2016 Games, 95 per cent complete

The Rio City Government, which is project managing construction of two main venue clusters – the Olympic Parks in Barra and Deodoro - for the Rio 2016 Games, has announced they are both near completion.

Barra Olympic Park – which will be the heart of Games with its nine venues (seven new, two existing) hosting 16 Olympic and nine Paralympic sports, alongside the Main Press Centre and the International Broadcast Centre – is now 95 per cent complete. It staged its first competition, the tennis test event in December 2015 at the same time shining a light on the sporting, educational and social legacy that the Games will leave.

The Olympic and Paralympic Village, which will host nearly 15,000 athletes, is 97 per cent ready.

Deodoro Olympic Park has hosted six test events this year, including one each at the newly built BMX, mountain bike and canoe slalom venues that comprise the X-Park. Part of the X-Park was opened in December 2015 as a free public leisure facility, serving 10 underprivileged neighbourhoods close to Deodoro Olympic Park, where construction began in July 2014.

The city government said that work on the three X-Park venues is 100 per cent complete, while the Olympic Hockey Centre is 99 per cent ready and the Youth Arena (that will host preliminary basketball games, modern pentathlon and wheelchair fencing) is 75 per cent complete. Deodoro Olympic Park also features three existing venues (for shooting, equestrian and modern pentathlon swimming) and will have a temporary venue, the Deodoro stadium, which will host rugby sevens, modern pentathlon and football 7-a-side.
