Iran's Javanmardidodmani smashes two world records at Incheon 2014

Iran’s world champion pistol shooter Sareh Javanmardidodmani smashed the P4 (mixed 50m pistol SH1) and P2 (women’s 10m air pistol SH1) world records on Sunday (19 October) and Monday (20 October) at the Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games.

Javanmardidodmani, who collected her first world title at July’s IPC Shooting World Championships in Suhl, Germany, in P2, looked shocked after adding 8.7 points to the previous P4 mark with a score of 192.8.

China’s Hedong Ni (183.1), a bronze medallist in the event from London 2012, took silver, whilst there was a promising performance from Mongolian Ganbataar Zandraa (162.9) in third place.

After securing a coveted qualification place for Rio 2016 at Mongolia’s first World Championships at Suhl 2014, Zandraa beat the likes of P4 Paralympic champion Sea Kyun-Park to the podium in Incheon.

Javanmardidodmani (200.4) then led Thailand’s Sompron Muangsiri (186.4) and Iranian Alieh Mahmoudikordkheili (164.9) to take gold on Monday with another finals world record in P2.

Elsewhere on Sunday at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range, there was shock in R2 (women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1) after China’s Yaping Yan claimed gold ahead of Paralympic champion and teammate Cuiping Zhang.

Yan shot an Asian record of 205.8 to take gold whilst South Korea’s Myung-Soon Kang (204.9) won silver. Zhang (182.3) completed the podium to add another medal for China.

China stepped onto the podium once again with Paralympic champion Chao Dong (206.4) taking the win in R1 (men’s 10m air rifle standing SH1) and equalling the finals world record.He also set a new Asian record.

Dong did not make it into the medals at Suhl 2014 but came back with a convincing win ahead of UAE’s Abdulla Sultan Alayrani (205.7) and South Korea’s Jin-Hwa Jeon (184.9).

Rounding off Monday’s action, Zhang (452.2) returned to the range determined to make up for disappointment the day before, and did so by winning R8 (women’s 50m rifle three positions).

The world champion this time beat Yan (447.9) and Kang (427.4) to take gold.

Thailand claimed their next shooting medal as Bordin Sornsriwicha beat his closest competitor by 2.3 points in P1 (men’s 10m air pistol SH1) after setting a new Asian record in qualification.

Iranian Mahdi Zamanishurabi (193.5) won silver and was joined on the podium by South Korea’s Young Jyun-Seo (173.5).

Shooting competitions at Incheon 2014 continue until Thursday (23 October) and feature around 80 athletes from 18 countries.
