Doha 2015 Newsletter - Incredible legacy: Hamad International Airport

Offering barrier-free access for people with disabilities, the airport easily coped with large numbers of passengers with an impairment when Doha recently hosted the GCC Para-Athletics Championships, fully testing its abilities.

HIA opened just 18 months ago in April 2014 and has a Passenger Terminal that spans over more than 600,000 square metres and offers a seamless experience from check-in to transfers and boarding. HIA offers barrier-free access and dedicated facilities that make travelling more comfortable for passengers with special needs.

A network of elevators, escalators, ramps, travellators and Automated People Mover offers ease of access to passengers with reduced mobility. HIA installed elevators at the boarding gates for A380 plane making it easier to board the upper deck.

The seamless journey begins in the airport’s car parks. Both short-term and long-term car parks offer dedicated parking spaces for passengers with reduced mobility.

Complimentary wheelchairs are available throughout the Passenger Terminal. Passengers requiring help to move around in a wheelchair should inform the airline before travelling so that a personal helper can be arranged.

Each check-in facility includes an adapted service desk designed to ease checking-in for passengers with limited mobility. Accessible washrooms are available at various locations across the Passenger Terminal and are clearly marked.

The largest para-sport event ever to come to the Middle East will fully test HIA’s capabilities in terms of accessibility but the recent GCC Para-Athletics Championships, which served as a test event for the World Championships, showed that the airport is more than able to cope. Preparations have included the implementation of faster procedures to receive wheelchairs at the door of the aeroplane, wider security gates, improved processing of equipment through the airport and additional training for airport staff.

All of these improvements have ensured that HIA can even more competently cope with increased numbers of passengers with an impairment, ensuring a legacy for Qatar that lasts long beyond the IPC Athletics World Championships have finished.

مطار حمد الدولي

تأسس مطار حمد الدولي مع امكانيات ضخمة تشمل العديد من التسهيلات للأشخاص ذوي الإعاقة، كما اتضح فعالية هذه التسهيلات خلال بطولة ألعاب القوى لذوي الإعاقة لدول مجلس التعاون التي تم استضافتها مؤخراً.

أفتتح المطار منذ 18 شهراَ فقط في أبريل 2014، وتبلغ ساحة المبنى الرئيسي للركاب 600 ألف متر مربع، ويوفر مبنى الركاب حركة سلسة تبدأ من مكاتب الجوازات وحتى بوابات الطائرات. يقدم مطار حمد الدولي تسهيلات ومرافق مخصصة ممت تجعل السفر أكثر راحة للركاب من ذوي الإعاقة.

المطار له شبكة من المصاعد والسلالم المتحركة والتي توفر سهولة الحركة للركاب من ذوي الإعاقة. وتم أيضاً وضع مصاعد على أبواب الصعود للطائرة A380 مما يجعل من الأسهل الصعود للطابق العلوي.

الرحلة السلسة تبدأ في مواقف السيارات في المطار- سواء على المدى القصير أو الطويل – التي توفر أماكن وقوف السيارات المخصصة للركاب من ذوي الإعاقة. الكراسي المتحركة متوفرة في جميع أنحاء مبنى الركاب، ويجب على الركاب الذين يحتاجون المساعدة استخدام الكرسي المتحرك ، وإبلاغ شركة الطيران قبل السفر بحيث يمكن ترتيب مساعد شخصي لهم.

تتضمن مكاتب تسجيل الوصول أماكن مخصصة لذوي الإعاقة، وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، تتوفر مراحيض منتشرة في مبنى الركاب لذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة.

وستختبر بطولة العالم لألعاب القوى لذوي الإعاقة الدوحة 2015 ،امكانيات مطار حمد الدولي من حيث امكانية الوصول، ولكن أثبتت بطولة العاب القوى لذوي الإعاقة لدول مجلس التعاون استعداد المطار للتعامل مع الأعداد الكبيرة من الركاب من ذوي الإعاقة. و تشمل استعدادات المطار تنفيذ إجراءات أسرع للحصول على كرسي متحرك عند باب الطائرة، و توسيع البوابات الأمنية ،وتحسين الإجراءات لدخول المعدات عن طريق المطار وتدريب إضافي لموظفي المطار.

ضمنت كل هذه التحسينات بأن مطار حمد الدولي يمكنه التعامل بكفاءة أكثر مع الأعداد المتزايدة من الركاب ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة، وضمان إرث لدولة قطر تستمر ما بعد انتهاء بطولة العالم لألعاب القوى لذوي الإعاقة الدوحة 2015.
