Great Britain celebrate triple gold rowing success
11.09.2016Great Britain dominated in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, while Samuel Moran claimed Israel’s first medal at Rio 2016.
In great conditions in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, overlooking the Christ the Redemeer and the Sugarloaf, four breathtaking rowing finals A took place.
The women’s single sculls (ASW1x) was a three-way race, with Great Britain’s Rachel Morris taking gold with a time of 5:13.69. Samuel Moran narrowly missed out on silver, collecting bronze only 1.21 seconds behind China’s Lili Wang and giving Israel its first medal at Rio 2016.
“I feel great joy, I expected to finish first but still winning my country’s first Paralympic medal is a great honour. It is just great to be part of this celebration of sports,” said Moran.
Great Britain also took gold in the mixed double sculls (TAMix2x) and the mixed coxed four (LTAMix4+).
Lauren Rowles and Laurence Whiteley (3:55.28) crossed the finish line in first place in the former, followed by China’s Shuang Liu and Tianming Fei (3:58.45), and France’s Perle Bouge and Stephane Tardieu (4:01.48).
“It means everything to us, we have been working so hard every day to achieve this,” said Rowles.
“It is absolutely incredible. We had a mission, we came here and we did it.”
The British crew (3:17.17) beat the USA (3:19.61) and Canada (3:19.90) to seal the country’s second rowing gold of the day in the mixed coxed four.
Ukraine’s Roman Polianskyi (4:39.56) dominated the men’s single sculls (ASM1x) from the beginning and claimed gold far ahead of Australia’s Erik Horrie (4:42.94) and Great Britain’s Tom Aggar (4:50.90).
“This was possible thanks to the hard work I have made for a long time,” said Polianskyi.
“And receiving my rivals’ recognition after the race was very nice.”
