With just over two months to go until the IPC Powerlifting Open European Championships, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) launched the event’s website on Thursday (14 March) at www.paralympic.org/Events/Alexin2013.

The Championships will take place from 22-28 May in Alexin, Russia, and are expected to draw around 150 athletes from more than 15 countries as the first major gathering of international powerlifters since the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The event website will feature the latest news, features and images for the Championships, as well as pertinent information for teams, schedules and results.

Craig Spence, IPC Director of Media and Communications, said: “The event website will be the central place for fans and media alike to follow the IPC Powerlifting Open European Championships, which will draw several medallists and top names from London 2012, where nearly 4,500 spectators watched the powerlifting competition each day.”

The Championships will include the new weight categories, which took effect on 1 January, changing the structure of weight classes. This follows an extensive review of all bodyweight category trends across major competitions.

The event is open to all countries practicing the sport, as two parallel medal events will be conducted, and it is a great opportunity for athletes to establish regional and world records. The event will serve as a European Championships for lifters within Europe, as well as an International Open event for all IPC Powerlifting licensed athletes who wish to achieve the minimum qualifying standard required for the 2014 World Championships.

Powerlifters from 11 countries, including top athletes from Russia, Ukraine, Great Britain and France have already confirmed their participation in the Championships, which will be organised by the Russian Sport Federation for Physically Disabled Athletes.

Athletes have until 28 March to register for the Championships.
