IPC and Channel 4 set to agree new partnership for PyeongChang 2018, Tokyo 2020

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and Channel 4 have signed a letter of intent for the broadcaster to remain as Great Britain’s Paralympic rights holder until 2020, covering the next two editions of the Paralympic Games and the London 2017 Para Athletics World Championships.
The announcement for Channel 4 to continue promoting Para sport for the next four years aligns with the broadcaster’s unique public service remit and comes just days after the conclusion of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
During Rio 2016, Channel 4 broadcast over 700 hours of Paralympics coverage to strong audiences – with coverage watched by 28 million viewers, nearly half of all UK TV viewers. The broadcaster made a ground-breaking commitment to on and off-screen diversity, assembling the largest ever team of disabled presenters on UK television and training 20 disabled production staff who worked on coverage of the Games.
The letter of intent outlines the principles of a new agreement between the IPC, the Paralympic Movement’s global governing body, and Channel 4 with negotiations over the detail of the contract set to continue over the coming weeks.

Channel 4 has committed to building on its coverage of the Games in London, Sochi and Rio for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The broadcasters will also be the showcase for other IPC major events such as the London 2017 Para Athletics World Championships with programming created, promoted and scheduled to draw large audiences.
Channel 4 will also use its acclaimed All 4 digital platform to broadcast increased coverage of live Paralympic sport – with even greater resource diverted to social media and online targeting of new audiences and the creation of a 24-7 zone for para-sport followers, old and new.
Ahead of Rio 2016, Channel 4’s advertising campaign ‘We’re the Superhumans’ won worldwide acclaim, becoming the most shared Olympic or Paralympic ad globally in 2016.
The Rio Paralympic Games were the centrepiece of Channel 4’s 2016 Year of Disability – launched in January as part of the channel’s ongoing 360º Diversity Charter commitments – which includes major on and off screen commitments to improving representation of people with an impairment.
Channel 4’s acclaimed coverage of London 2012 broke all viewing records for Paralympic sport and won a BAFTA award for best Sport and Live Event coverage.
