CP World Championships: Brazil, the Netherlands reach quarterfinals
22.06.2015Brazil rolled over the US to remain unbeaten, and the Netherlands finished top of Group D.
Brazil breezed by USA and into the quarter-finals of the Cerebral Palsy Football 7-a-side World Championships on Sunday (21 June) as the group stages wrapped up in St. George’s Park, Great Britain.
For the third successive game, Brazil thumped their Group C opponents 6-0 to qualify with maximum points, inflicting USA with their first defeat of the tournament.
Jose Guimaraes scored two of Brazil’s goals whilst Ubirajara da Silva Magalhaes, Wanderson de Oliveira, Fernandes Vieira, Felipe da Silva Gomes also made the score sheet.
The other game in Group C saw Scotland secure their first win of the competition with a5-0 win over Venezuela.
In Wednesday’s (24 June) quarter-finals Brazil will face rivals Argentina after they finished runner-up in Group D thanks to two late goals in their final group game against Northern Ireland.
Trailing 3-1 with four minutes to go, Argentina were heading out of the tournament. However goals from Rodrigo Lugrin and Mariano Morana levelled the scores late on, saving their blushes and qualifying them for the next round.
European champions the Netherlands qualified from Group D with maximum points thanks to a 4-1 victory over Canada. They will now play the USA in the quarter finals.
Sam Charron scored Canada’s only goal in the opening minute, but Iljas Visker equalised just before half-time. In the second half the Netherlands pulled away thanks to goals from Peter Krooij, Jeroen Saedt and Lars Conijn.
Teams rest on Monday, with knockout matches set for Tuesday (23 June): Japan vs. Portugal, Northern Ireland vs. Scotland and Canada vs. Venezuela. Australia receives a bye.
