Bring the Power of Sport to Disabled Refugees

Ibrahim Al Hussein beamed with pride and purpose as he carried the flag of the first ever refugee team in to the stadium for the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Just three years earlier his leg had been blown off in a rocket attack near his home in Syria, beginning a challenging but inspiring journey towards becoming an international swimmer. We passionately believe that sport can provide a vital transition for many more disabled refugees and displaced people. As the lead charity within the Paralympic Movement, we want to quickly build on our practical work in Rwanda's refugee camps as well as the positivity that Ibrahim and his team generated in Rio. Ibrahim’s journey took him via Turkey to a refugee camp near Athens and it is in this region that, with your help, we now want to ensure the success of an exciting and highly necessary project. An innovative, cross-border collaboration will see Greece, Serbia and Cyprus come together, with specialist support from UNHCR and the University of Athens, to deliver Para sport opportunities to some of the 5,000 disabled refugees in the area. Since the start of 2015 it is estimated that 1.3 million people have fled to Europe. We will invest your funds in providing information about Para sport to agencies running the refugee camps; registering refugees, especially children, with impairments; giving refugees the chance to learn about the Paralympic Movement; organising a training camp and growing a network to ensure that refugees with impairments have access to sport programmes and competitions.  We want to raise a minimum of EUR 25,000 towards the cost of this project. Any surplus funds raised will go towards supporting the refugee team into 2017, where Ibrahim aims to compete at the World Para Swimming Championships in Mexico and Shahrad Nasajpour at the World Para Athletics Championships in London.
