Alpine skiing Europa Cups move to Slovenia, Croatia

A series of medallists from the recently concluded 2017 World Para Alpine Skiing Championships are set to line up in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, and Zagreb-Sljeme, Croatia for two World Para Alpine Skiing Europa Cups from Monday (13 February).

Kranjska Gora will host two slalom races before giant slalom is contested in Zagreb-Sljeme from 15-16 February.

Austria’s Thomas Grochar, 23, will compete at both events just a couple of weeks after winning silver in the men’s slalom standing at the 2017 Worlds in Tarvisio, Italy.

In the women’s standing, Germany’s Anna-Marie Rieder will line-up in Zagreb-Sljeme as the bronze medallist from the slalom.

Poland’s Igor Sikorski left Tarvisio delighted with his silver from the men’s slalom sitting – his first Worlds medal. He will compete in his specialist event once again as he prepares to take on the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games Test Event from 9-18 March.

Also in Zagreb-Sljeme, Austria’s Markus Gfatterhofer will race giant slalom as the new men’s sitting World Championships bronze medallist.

Germany’s Ruth Hagspiel will take on Austria’s Heike Tuertscher in the women’s giant slalom sitting. Both women made their major international debut at Tarvisio 2017, achieving top 10 finishes.

Poland’s double Paralympian Maciej Krezel and guide Anna Ogarzynska headline the men’s visually impaired field.

In the women’s, Belgian 19-year-old Eleonor Sana and sister guide Chloe will be hoping to turn their first Worlds speed medals from the downhill and super-G to their advantage in the technical events.

Germany’s Noemi Ewa Ristau, the slalom bronze medallist, will try her hand in the giant slalom with guide Lucien Gerkau.
