Kunz speeds to first World Cup victory since 2014

Guided by Fabrizio Casal, the 17-year-old stormed to his first speed win of the season. His victory ahead of Miroslav Haraus and guide Maros Hudik in second and Canada’s Mac Marcoux, guided by Jack Leitch, in third, is sure to turn heads.

Switzerland’s Christoph Kunz took his first World Cup victory since 2014 in Innerkrems, Austria, on Saturday (14 January), beating New Zealand’s world champion Corey Peters in the super-G.

Almost three years to the day since Kunz won the same discipline in Tignes, France, the double Paralympian crossed the line to claim the win.

Peters was 0.62 seconds behind for his second podium finish of the week, having won one of two downhill races on Thursday (12 January).

The USA’s Andrew Kurka was third.

Austria’s Claudia Loesch followed up on her double downhill win from Thursday in the women’s sitting. The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games silver medallist pushed Germany’s Paralympic and world champion Anna Schaffelhuber into second. The result adds another chapter to their rivalry with the 2017 World Para Alpine Skiing Championships just under 10 days away.

Japan’s Momoka Muraoka completed the podium in third.

With the clock ticking down to his home World Championships in Tarvisio, Italy’s Giacomo Bertagnolli found some excellent form in the men’s visually impaired.

In the women’s visually impaired Great Britain’s Millie Knight continued her podium run. The 17-year-old has finished in the top three at every single World Cup race so far this season, including two wins in the downhill on Thursday with guide Brett Wild.

Slovakia’s Henrieta Farkasova, guided by Natalia Subrtova, was second. The Vancouver 2010 Paralympic gold medallist has also maintained a series of podium finishes since returning to competition in December after more than two years away.

Knight’s Paralympic champion teammate Kelly Gallagher was third with guide Gary Smith.

Paralympic title holder Markus Salcher claimed the second win of the day for Austria in the men’s standing. The 25-year-old is unbeaten in Innerkrems having won both downhill races.

Switzerland’s Thomas Pfyl was second. The Netherlands’ Jeffrey Stuut sealed his first World Cup podium in third.

Germany’s World Championships silver medallist Andrea Rothfuss was the victor in the women’s standing, 0.86 seconds ahead of Canada’s Alana Ramsay. Dutch skier Anna Jochemsen was third.

High winds meant that the second super-G race scheduled for Saturday was cancelled. The super combined is currently still set to take place on Sunday.
