Giant slalom concludes at Espot Europa Cup

The men’s races were all led by Austrians, including Roman Rabl in the men’s sitting who took his fourth victory in as many days.

Skiers from Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Austria all topped the podium in giant slalom on Thursday (11 February), at the IPC Alpine Skiing Europa Cup in Espot, Spain.

The men’s races were all led by Austrians, including Roman Rabl in the men’s sitting who took his fourth victory in as many days.

The Paralympic bronze medallist had already won two races in super combined and the first giant slalom this week.

Rabl (2:01.97) led Norway’s Jesper Pedersen (2:08.36) into second. France’s Mathieu Camus (2:13.76) was third.

In the women’s sitting, the Netherlands’ Linda van Impelen (2:24.59) was victorious.

In the men’s standing Austria’s Christoph Bernard Schneider (2:03.56) confidently skied the two fastest runs. Finland’s Santeri Kiiveri (2:04.93) followed him onto the podium in second, as Austria’s Martin Wuerz (2:05.65) rounded off the top three.

Bigna Schmidt (2:21.84) claimed the win for Switzerland in the women’s standing, improving on her second run to first place. Spain enjoyed a podium double from Ursula Pueyo Marimon (2:29.34) and Barbara Perez de Juan (2:33.57) in second and third respectively.

Gernot Morgenfurt (2:24.09) completed the trio of Austrian wins in the men’s visually impaired with guide Christoph Peter Gmeiner.

In the women’s visually impaired Belgium’s Eleonor Sana (2:27.52), guided by Chloe Sana, led her teammate Marie Morgane Dessart (2:45.48) and guide Marine Francoise Antoine, into second.
