Italian Sidney Lukee Oketayot travels the world volunteering at different major social and sporting events and believes “Toronto 2015 is one of the best I have been to”.

The 22-year-old is one of 20,000 volunteers recruited by the Toronto 2015 Organising Committee for both last month’s Pan American Games and the upcoming Parapan American Games which open on Friday (7 August).

Having previously volunteered at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, Expo Milano and many other major events, Oketayot is now in Toronto ready for the Parapans which will involve 1,600 athletes from 28 countries. So far he is enjoying every single minute.

“Toronto is a famous and beautiful city, but I would not have thought of actually coming here if it were not for my love for volunteering, travelling, making new friends and being part of this huge success that the Pan Am / Parapan Am Games are,” said Oketayot with a huge smile.

On Tuesday (4 August), together with hundreds of others, he attended a special thank you event for volunteers hosted by Toronto Mayor John Tory and Toronto 2015 CEO Saad Rafi in the iconic Nathan Philips Square.

“I love volunteering at international events, whether they are film festivals, Olympic and Paralympic Games or universal expositions”, said Oketayot, a native of Como, Italy, who is studying electrical engineering at University in Milan.

Since first volunteering at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, Oketayot has tried his best to travel to major sporting or social events around the world.

“When I told my parents that I wanted to do volunteering, they were not so sure about it at first because they did not want me to stop studying. I told them I was not, and that I really wanted to do this”, he said.

“Then, they asked me where I wanted to go. When I answered Sochi, Russia, they were concerned about the cold weather. But they understood that volunteering is what I love doing and they allowed me to go. If I am happy, they are happy too, just as my three elder siblings: Emmanuel, Agnes and Michael.

“Being in Sochi was a really exciting experience. I then travelled to Romania, England, Switzerland and Germany. I volunteered at the Universal Exposition in Milano, as well,” he added.

“Volunteering makes me feel happy because I make new friends from all around the world. I stay at their houses when I travel to their countries or they stay at mine when they come to Italy. I think that is really fun!”

He assures that, after so many trips, he has learned a bit of Russian and Romanian. “It is really cool to learn more about different cultures and languages. The world is ours to discover.”

“Entonces, me preguntaron a dónde quería ir.

Luego, viajé a Rumania, Inglaterra, Suiza y Alemania.
