Some of the world’s fastest Paralympians will also race for gold later today.

USA’s Tatyana McFadden will be looking for double joy on the second day of the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France when she goes for gold in the women’s 200m and 5,000m T54 events.

As defending world champion, 24 year old McFadden will be confident of success in the morning’s 200m final, however in Sunday evening’s 5,000m, an event she did not compete in at London 2012, she will face extremely stiff competition from Switzerland’s Paralympic gold medallist Edith Wolf.

McFadden’s teammate, the world record holder Jeremy Campbell, will also be in action on Sunday afternoon when he goes head-to-head with Great Britain’s Dan Greaves in the discus F44.

As Paralympic champion, Campbell will start the competition as favourite, whilst Greaves knows he will most likely have to throw over 60m for the first time in a major competition to stand any chance of retaining his world title.

Some of the world’s fastest Paralympians will also race for gold on Sunday.

Ireland’s Jason Smyth, the world’s fastest Paralympian, will go in the 200m T13 final and soon after Brazil’s Alan Fonteles Oliveira, the fastest leg amputee on the planet, will aim to prove his London 2012 gold medal success was not a fluke when he lines-up alongside USA’s Blake Leeper in the 200m T43 final.

The men’s 200m T44 final is also expected to be a thrilling affair with USA’s Jarryd Wallace starting as favourite after breaking the world record in Saturday's heats. He will face stiff competition to win gold however from his teammates David Prince and Jerome Singleton, as welll as South African Arnu Fourie.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland who won 10,000m gold on Saturday night will be looking to add to his medal collection in the 400m T54.

He only finished fifth in this event at London 2012 and to take gold in Lyon will most likely have to beat China’s Paralympic champion Lixin Zhang.

Another athlete who will be looking to add to his medal tally is USA’s Raymond Martin. The 19 year old who won 1,500m T52 gold on Saturday will on Sunday contest the 800m.

Two world champions from 2011 in Christchurch, New Zealand – Germany’s Heinrich Popow and Russia’s Margarita Goncharova – will also be looking to retain their titles today.

Championship record holder Popow will compete in the long jump T42 whilst Goncharova will line-up in the semi-finals of the women’s 200m T38.

The 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships, featuring over 1,000 athletes from nearly 100 countries, runs through until Sunday 28 July. It is the biggest gathering of international athletes since London 2012 and is being streamed each day live via www.ParalympicSport.TV.
