The US men’s wheelchair basketball team for August’s Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games has been named following a training camp and friendly international competition with Great Britain at the Olympic Training Centre in Colorado Springs earlier this month.
The team features 12 players, including eight Paralympians, and will be hopeful of retaining the gold medal they won four years ago in Guadalajara, Mexico, when they defeated Colombia 60-40.
The 12 players are:
• Jared Arambula (2.5)
• Brian Bell (4.5)
• Aaron Gouge (2.0)
• Nate Hinze (4 .5) (Paralympian)
• Trevon Jenifer (2.5) (Paralympian)
• Ian Lynch (1.0) (Paralympian)
• Mike Paye (3.0) (Paralympian)
• Jermell Pennie (1.5) (Paralympian)
• Matt Scott (3.5) (Paralympian)
• Steve Serio (3.5) (Paralympian)
• Josh Turek (3.5) (Paralympian)
• Jake Williams (2.5)
“We are very pleased with how our players competed throughout the duration of this camp. They continued to improve each day and that is all we can ask for. We feel their play since our selection process started in January and during this last camp made our decision that much harder. We are pleased with the 12 athletes we selected. We think there is a nice balance between veterans and newcomers. Now we can turn all our attention to preparing our players for Toronto." said Head Coach of the Men's team, Ron Lykins.
In January 2015, a group of 18 was announced and now it has been narrowed down to these 12 players. Throughout the year the athletes have worked hard to earn a spot on the final roster traveling to Toronto. Their performance in August will determine a presence at the Paralympics in Rio next year.
