South Korea finish top of Incheon shooting medals table

Incheon 2014 hosts South Korea have taken the final two shooting gold medals on offer at the Asian Para Games courtesy of Jin-Ho Park and Young-Jun Jeon, securing their place at the top of the medals table after winning a total of eight of the 15 titles.

In addition to their gold medal haul, the team won three silver and eight bronze medals.

China finished second with 10 medals including three gold, five silver and two bronze and Iran third with two gold, two silver and one bronze.

Park (457.5) won R7 (men's 50m rifle three positions SH1) by equalling the Asian finals world record and beating one of his closest rival Abdulla Sultan Alayrani (456.6) of the United Arab Emirates.

The last time the pair met in R7 at August's IPC Shooting World Championships in Suhl, Germany, Alayrani edged Park to take silver.

This time the South Korean, the R3 (mixed 10m air rifle prone SH1) world champion, came from behind in the standing rounds after losing out to Alayrani throughout the kneeling and prone.

The win is the third gold medal of Incheon 2014 for Park. His teammate Jin-Hwa Jeon (441.7) won bronze.

Not to be outdone by his teammates, in R9 (mixed 50m rifle prone SH2) Jeon (615.7) took his second title with an Asian record of his own. A sequence of 103.3 and two 103.1's bought up his score enough to beat China's Hongxiang Yuan (613.1).

Yuan was let down by a sub-100 point score in the second series, dashing his chances of taking gold despite strong, focused shooting in the other rounds.

Geun-Soo Kim (612.3) followed on from his gold medal from Wednesday (22 October) to complete the podium.

A total of three world records were set over the course of four days at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range, all by South Korean shooters. Three finals world records were set, including two by new Iranian world champion Sareh Javanmardidodmani.

Seven Asian records and six finals Asian records were also set by athletes from Iran, Korea, China and Thailand.

Around 80 athletes from 18 countries competed in shooting competitions at the Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games, which run until 24 October.
