Para-athletics classification ensures fair and equal competition among athletes by guaranteeing that winning is determined by skill, fitness, power, endurance, tactical ability and mental focus – the same factors that determine success for able bodied athletes.

The purpose of the classifications is to minimise the impact of impairments on the sport discipline. As such athletes are grouped according to the degree of activity limitation resulting from impairment.

Governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the classifications are categorised into ten different groups. These groups include visual impairment, impaired strength, impaired range of movement, limb deficiency, leg-length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, and intellectual impairment. Classes are denoted using a letter prefix of either T for track or F for field as well as a number which indicates the nature and severity of the impairment.
