Adaptive Sports Centre in Whistler Obtains Grant

    09.04.2009

The proposed centre is two levels, standing at mid-station on Whistler Mountain. The top floor will be used for programme services, and the ground floor will be for storage and maintenance.

It will replace the current WASP Equipment Centre which was provided by the Rotary Club of Whistler in 2000. The facility will be open and accessible, and used by the participants in the Whistler Adaptive Ski and Ride Programme, as well as WASP’s Hiking and Alpine Skiing racing programmes.

This significant grant moves WASP closer to achieving their dream of providing a permanent legacy for people with a disability in Whistler. The Executive Director of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, Mei McCurdy, said that the foundation is proud to be able to donate such a large amount of money to WASP and create a lasting legacy.

The grant provides over 30% of the costs toward this facility in the community of Whistler. WASP continues to raise the remaining US$ 113,500 needed to complete the building.

The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation is dedicated to providing financial support to registered non-profit organizations whose activities provide benefit to residents of the Sea to Sky Corridor in the areas of health, human services, education, recreation, arts & culture and the environment with an emphasis on children, youth and family programmes.

WASP is a not-for-profit society that provides year-around, sports and recreational programmes for people of all ages with a disability. For more information about WASP, please visit the official website at www.whistleradaptive.com.
