Swimming: Day six preview

After an incredible day in the pool on Monday (12 September), swimmers will dive in once again looking for more records.
An excellent day in the pool on Monday (12 September) saw legends such as New Zealand’s Sophie Pascoe, Brazil’s Daniel Dias and Great Britain’s Eleanor Simmonds all win gold.
Most will be in action once again on day six, hoping to continue to impress.
Men’s 100m freestyle S10
Brazil’s double Paralympic champion Andre Brasil is the man to beat in this event. He won his first major title in 2006 and has won at every World Championships and Paralympic Games since then. However, Brasil has been impressed with the standard of competition in Rio and will not get an easy pass to gold.
Men’s 50m freestyle S3
A 50m freestyle specialist, Ukraine’s Dmytro Vynohradets has enjoyed a decade of success in this race. He picked up his first world title in 2006 and Paralympic title in 2008 before doubling up at London 2012.
Women’s 400m freestyle S6
The 400m freestyle is set to be one of the most exciting events of the Paralympic Games. Ukrainian world champion Yelyzaveta Mereshko beat Great Britain’s Paralympic title holder Eleanor Simmonds at the 2015 Worlds, the first time the Briton has experienced defeat since 2008 in this event. Simmonds then broke the world record in April, swiftly followed by Mereshko in May.
Men’s 200m freestyle S4
Since London 2012, South Korean 2015 world champion Giseong Jo has emerged as a main contender to Mexican Paralympic champion Gustavo Sanchez.
Men’s 100m breaststroke SB11
Japan’s Keiichi Kimura is on course to secure his first Paralympic gold in this race at Rio 2016 as the world title holder. He will face Ukraine’s Oleksandr Mashchenko, a consistent podium finisher since Sydney 2000.
Women’s 100m freestyle S10
New Zealand’s Paralympic and world champion Sophie Pascoe faces a close battle with Canada’s Aurelie Rivard. With just 0.09 seconds separating the pair on the podium at the 2015 World Championships, Rivard went on to break the world record at the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games. However, Pascoe has returned to some of her best form in Rio, winning two golds and setting a two new world records to become New Zealand’s most decorated Paralympian.
Men’s 200m individual medley SM7
Apart from one disqualification at the 2013 World Championships, Ukraine’s Yevheniy Bohodayko has not faltered in this event and is the world record holder from his gold medal win at London 2012.
Women’s 50m freestyle S9
Australia’s Ellie Cole set a new world record in April 2016 to show her improving form. At Rio 2016 she will face Spain’s Sarai Gascon, the reigning world champion.
