Many Medal Positions Unchanged on Second Day of World Cup

Thursday saw fierce competition in the second day of Giant Slalom events at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Alpine Skiing World Cup in Arte Terme, Italy.
Positions remained unchanged in the women’s Slalom Visually Impaired with Slovakia’s Henrieta Farkasova and guide Natalia Subrtova (2:31.80) bagging their second gold of the competition. Though Russia’s Alexandra Frantseva and guide Pavel Zabotin did a very strong first run, their second run pushed them into second place in a time of 2:34.20. Australia’s Melissa Perrine (2:38.87) came in third, guided by Andrew Bor.
The status quo was also upheld in the women’s Standing event, with France’s Marie Bochet first, Germany’s Andrea Rothfuss second and Italy’s Melania Corradini in third place.
After Wednesday’s gold medallist in the women’s Sitting event, Kimberly Joines of Canada did not finish her race, Germany’s Anna Schaffelhuber took gold and USA’s Laurie Stephens came in second.
Russia’s Valery Redkozubov was pushed off his top spot in the men’s Visually Impaired by Spain’s Jon Santacana Maiztegui (2:19.15), who won gold. Redkozubov (2:20.82) took silver and Slovakia’s Miroslav Haraus (2:23.69) came third.
After Wednesday’s men’s Standing gold medallist, Austria’s Markus Salcher, did not finish, France’s Vincent Manuel-Gauthier (2:13.29) rose to the top of the podium. Switzerland’s Thomas Pfyl (2:14.96) bagged silver and Australia’s Mitch Gourley (2:16.96) remained in third place.
Japan continued to dominate the men’s Sitting events with Taiki Morii (2:13.22) taking gold and his teammate, Takeshi Suzuki (2:17.09) coming third. Switzerland’s Christoph Kunz (2:14.30) came in a close second, to take silver.
