Heats Begin on Day 5 of Swimming Worlds

Athletes hit the water hard this morning on day five of the 2010 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships.

Heats began in the morning, with the results going toward the finals this evening inside Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. In the Women`s 50m Freestyle (S9), Great Britain`s Louise Watikin finished with a time of 29.79, followed by South Africa`s Natalia du Toit with 29.96. For the Men`s event, China`s Zhi Gui finished with a time of 25.87, followed by Australia`s Matthew Cowdrey. Cowdrey holds the World record in the 50m Freestyle, with his time of 25.34 at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

In the Women`s 100m Butterfly (S8), Jessica Long (USA) came in on top in the second heat with 1:13.31. Following Long in time was China`s Xiaoqin Jin with 1:15.85. In the Men`s event, China`s Yanpeng Wei had the best time in the third heat with 1:02.99. Following Wei was France`s Charles Rozoy from the first heat with 1:04.01.

Finals will take place tonight starting at 17:00 in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium.

Taking place from 15-21 August, a total of 649 athletes from 53 different countries are participating at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
