Games and American Records Broken in Pool on Day 5 of Parapans

The fifth day of Swimming at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico may have had a short programme of just seven medal events however it was not short of records or Brazilian success.

In total five Games and one Americas records were broken today in the Scotiabank Aquatics Centre and Brazil continued their medal winning habit taking home four gold medals.

The first gold medal of the day was won in the men’s 100m Freestyle S6 by Cuba’s Lorenzo Perez (1:09.42), his third gold of the Games. Silver went to his teammate Rafael Castillo (1:11.69) while bronze went to Brazil’s former America’s record holder Adriano de Lima (1:12.72).

The second race of the day saw a clean sweep of the medals in the women’s 100m Freestyle S6 by the host nation. Doramitzi Gonzalez (1:23.54) won her second gold of the Games in a Parapn record time ahead of teammates Vianney Trejo (1:25.04) and Karina Domingo Bello (1:29.25) in silver and bronze respectively.

Mexico continued their good form going into the men’s 200m Individual Medley SM8. Luis Andrade Guillen (2:38.86) took gold for the hosts in a Games record ahead of the Brazilian pair of Caio Oliveira (2:44.69) and William Sanatana (2:53.25).

Daniel Dias (32.80) claimed an extraordinary sixth gold medal of the Games in the men’s 50m Freestyle S5 in a Games record time. It was a clean sweep for Brazil with teammates Clodoaldo Silva (35.45) taking silver and Francisco Avelino (43.98) the bronze.

Brazil won another gold in the women’s 50m Freestyle S5. Joana Silva (39.42) claimed her second gold of the Games ahead of USA’s Alyssa Gialamas (47.89) and Mexico’s Nely Miranda Herrera (50.01).

A third gold was won for Brazil in the men’s 200m Individual Medley SM9 by Matteus Silva (2:41.23) in a thrilling race that saw him just edge out Argentina’s Juan Rosatti (2:41.63) in to silver. Rosatti’s teammate Facundo Lazo (2:49.33) took bronze.

The final event of the day saw Brazil (2:38.22) easily win the men’s 4x50m Medley Relay ahead of Argentina (3:21.88).

In total there are 85 medal events in seven days of swimming competition at the Parapan American Games involving 180 swimmers from 14 countries. On Thursday (16 November) swimmers will contest nine medal events.
