First Day of Events Concludes at IPC Swimming Euros

The 2009 IPC Swimming European Championships have jumped to main event status in Reykjavik, Iceland, as the first day of competition completed its full run.

In the Men's 400m Freestyle (S6), Sweden's Anders Olsson took first place and set a new World record with a time of 4:47.75. Following Olsson were Darragh McDonald (IRL) in second, and Matthew Whorwood (GBR) in third. In the Women's 400m Freestyle (S6), Great Britain's star athlete Ellie Simmonds took first with a time of 5:37.31. Natalie Jones (GBR) and Sarah Louise Rung (NOR) took second and third place respectively.

For the Men's 100m Butterfly (S9), Tamas Sors from Hungary took first with a time of 1:00.20. Following just 0.25s behind was Croatia's Kristijan Vincetic, with Italy’s Federico Morlacchio coming in third. In the Women's 100m Butterfly (S9), Great Britain's Stephanie Millward took first with a time of 1:10.78. Millward was followed by Sarai Gascon Moreno (ESP) and Elizabeth Simpkin (GBR) respectively.

In the Men's 50m Freestyle (S5), Spain's Sebastian Rodriguez Veloso took first with a time of 33.88s. Anthony Stephens (GBR) and Hayri Simsek (FRA) took second and third respectively. In the Women's 50m Freestyle (S5), Ukraine's Natalia Prologaieva took first with a time of 36.58s. She was followed by Bela Hlavackova (CZE) and Lisette Desiree Teunissen (NED) respectively.

The 2009 IPC Swimming European Championships continue in Reykjavik, Iceland, through 24 October. The event has a total 650 athletes and staff in the Nordic country, along with 37 participating countries.
