Although the Tokyo 1964 Paralympic Games were the first Games for which the name “Paralympic” can be proven to exist in written form, the medal and ribbon both displayed the name “The Tokyo Games for the Physically Handicapped”. The medal features stylised birds superimposed on an embossed Mount Fuji (Japan’s highest mountain), and the ribbon shows a dove with five interlocking rings, resembling the three interlocking rings used by the International Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Sports Federation (ISMWSF), a predecessor of the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWASF).
