World Para Nordic Skiing and the International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments (INAS) are to host three camps for skiers with intellectual impairments:

    9-14 December 2018: Bessans, France

    20-25 January 2019: Ostersund, Sweden

March 2019: TBC - will be connected to INAS World Championships

The aim of these events – which are the first of their kind – is to understand the sport with a view to creating a regular programme of competitions under World Para Nordic Skiing.

All athletes registered with INAS can take part.

    About II Nordic skiing

The International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments (INAS) has been growing Nordic skiing for more than a decade as the governing body for these athletes.

Skiers are eligible to compete at an INAS event once they have been approved by the INAS Eligibility Panel, who review evidence to determine if an athlete meets the criteria to compete as an athlete with an intellectual impairment, namely:

    - Have an IQ of 75 or lower

    - Have significant limitations in adaptive behaviour as expressed in conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills

    - Have been diagnosed before the age of 18 (i.e. in the developmental stage of their life)

Athletes have certain challenges to overcome during competition. These include pacing during a race, tactics, and fine adjustments such as repeating the best route around a course.

INAS hosts World Championships every year which normally attract around 30 athletes.

Athletes compete in cross-country skiing over different distances, as at World Para Nordic Skiing competitions.

INAS and World Para Nordic Skiing are working together to build the sport for athletes with intellectual impairments. This includes research into a classification system and camps for athletes.
