    Ukraine and Canada Shine in Eindhoven

    Ukraine was the dominating country on day two of the 2010 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, winning 14 medals in just one night.

    Ganna Ielisavetska (UKR) won the gold medal in the Women's 200m Freestyle (S2) event while breaking the existing world record. Ukraine swopped the medals in this event with Iryna Sotska taking the silver and Darya Kopayeva winning the bronze medal.

    Ielisavetska's compatriot Dmytro Vynohradets broke a world record in the Men's 200m Freestyle S3 event finishing first followed by China's Hanhua Li and Andrey Mescheryakov from Russia.

    Canadian athletes' also had a successful night winning three gold medals and breaking two world records.

    Benoit Huot took home the gold medal in the Men's 200m Individual Medley (SM10) event in a time of 2:11.30, breaking the previous world record by more than one second. Andre Brasil (BRA) came in second, followed by Belgium's Sven Decaesstecker.

    In the Women's 200m Individual Medley (SM10), Summer Mortimer finished first in a world record time of 2:30.14. New Zealand's Sophie Pascoe took the silver medal and Elodie Lorandi (FRA) came in third. In the Women’s 100m Breaststroke SB13 event, Chelsea Gotell led Canada to a 1-2 finish clocking a personal best 1:23.10 while Valerie Grand’Maison was second in 1:23.27 followed by Iryna Balashova (UKR) in 1:24.88.

    Taking place from 15-21 August, a total of 649 athletes from 53 different countries are participating at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Competing inside the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium for the gold, silver and bronze medal in their respective event, the number of participating athletes and countries is one of the largest of any previous Swimming World Championships.
