Sport week: Goalball venue at Rio 201607.05.2016
The Future Arena will host the goalball events at September’s Paralympic Games.
Goalball will take place in the Future Arena at Rio 2016. It has a capacity of 12,000 seats and uses “nomadic architecture” that promotes sustainability. After the Paralympic Games, this venue will be taken down, with its parts being used in the construction of four public schools for 500 students each.
On 8 September 2015, members of the Brazilian goalball men’s team played an exhibition game at the Future Arena, along with Rio mayor Eduardo Paes and Tom, the Paralympic mascot, to showcase the sport as part of the celebrations to mark one year until the beginning of the Games.
Future Arena is located within Barra Olympic Park, in Barra da Tijuca, one of the most well-known neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro. Beautiful lagoons, mountains and beaches surround this part of the city.
The Barra Olympic Park will be the heart of Rio 2016. This cluster contains nine venues, eight of which will host nine different Paralympic sports.
Editor’s note: Each sport on the Rio 2016 Paralympic programme will have a dedicated week of featured content published on paralympic.org. Every week a new sport will be featured and the series will run until September’s Games, helping the public understand more about the 22 sports being contested in Rio.
Sport fans from around the world can now buy their Paralympic tickets for Rio 2016 from authorised ticket resellers (ATRs).
