Former International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven has been honoured for his “outstanding achievements in sport and his dedication to disability sports” as part of the 19th German Paralympic Media Awards.

Sir Philip received the 2019 Special Award, which was decided by a jury led by 16-time Paralympic alpine skiing champion Gerd Schoenfelder.

Sir Philip, who represented Great Britain at the Paralympics in athletics, swimming and wheelchair basketball, was elected IPC President in Athens, Greece, in December 2001.

During his Presidency he transformed the IPC from a disability sports organisation to one of the most highly respected sports organisations in the world.

The IPC developed a reputation for strong governance and integrity, growing Para sport globally and staging sporting events that transformed and enriched the lives of millions of people around the world.

The Paralympic Games are now the world’s biggest sporting event for driving social inclusion.

    The German Paralympic Media Awards

The awards celebrate outstanding media coverage of sports for people with disabilities and are presented by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV). Their aim is to raise awareness of disability sport across the entire spectrum, beyond large sporting events.

Awards in photography, online/social media, audio, film/video and print are given. Double Paralympic athletics champion Heinrich Popow is the patron of this year’s edition.
