    PyeongChang 2018: Day 1 as it happens

    Twelve golds are up for grabs on the opening day of the Paralympic Winter Games.

    The opening day of competition at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games features action in four sports. Here are the latest updates.

    Alpine skiing - downhill events

    The first day of competition saw athletes tackle the downhill and the six gold medal winners all came from different countries.

    Slovakia's Henrieta Farkasova took the first gold medal of the Games claiming the win in the women's vision impaired. Great Britain's Millie Knight took silver and Belgium's Eleonor Sana the bronze.

    The women's standing was won by France's Marie Bochet who finished ahead of Gremany's Andrea Rothfuss and Canada's Mollie Jepson.

    After winning five gold medals in Sochi, Germany's Anna Schaffelhuber is already off the mark after taking gold in the women's sitting. Japan's Muraoka and the USA's Laurie Stephens took silver and bronze respectively.

    Canada's first gold of the Games was won by Mac Marcoux, guided by Jack Leitch, in the men's vsion impaired. Solvakia's Jakub Krako (guide Branislav Brozman) and Italy's Giacomo Bertagnolli (guide Fabrizio Casal) joined Marcoux on the podium, taking silver and bronze.

    Less than one second seperated the podium finishers in the men's standing. Switzerland's Theo Gmur took gold, 0.84 seconds ahead of silver medallist Arthur Bauchet of France. Austria's Marcus Salcher took bronze 0.1 seconds behind Bauchet.

    The final downhill event of the day was the men's sitting and it was won by the USA's Andrew Kurka. The early leader Taiki Morii of Japan finished with silver while bronze went to New Zealand's Corey Peters.

    On Sunday athletes will race in the Super-G.

    Biathlon - sprint

    The USA enjoyed a morning to remember winning two gold medals from two events, including a one-two finish in the women's sit ski.

    Gold went to Kendall Gretsch, silver to Oksana Masters and bronze to Lidzia Hrafeyeva of Belarus.

    Former US Navy Seal, and double Harvard graduate, Daniel Cnossen won the men's sit ski finishing ahead of Dzmitry Loban of Belarus and Coling Cameron of Canada respecively.

    Neutral Paralympic Athlete Ekaterina Rumyantseva took gold in the women's standing ahead of compatriot Anna Milenina. Bronze went to Ukraine's Liudmyla Liashenko.

    Benjamin Daviet gave France its second gold of the day in the men's 7.5km standing. Canada's Mark Arendz took silver and Ukraine's Ihor Reptyukh the bronze medal.

    Ukraine dominated the vision impaired events with gold and bronze in the men's 7.5km with Vitaliy Lukyanenko and Anatolii Kovalevskyi respectively. Belarus' Yury Holub finished with silver.

    Neutral Paralympic Athlete Mikhalina Lysova won the women's 6km vision impaired followed by Ukraine's Oksana Shyshkova and Belarus' Sviatlana Sakhanenka.

    Para ice hockey

    Hosts South Korea entertained the crowd in Gangneung in a 4-1 victory over Japan. Italy beat Norway 3-2 in the penalty-shot shootout in a nerve-wracking opening game.

    World champions Canada is up against Sweden at 19:00 for the last match of the day.

    Wheelchair curling

    Gangneung Curling Centre hosted another great start from the Koreans. They beat USA 7-3 and now face NPA at 19:35.

    NPA did not have a good start with a 9-4 loss to Germany. In the other matches of session 1, Great Britain beat Norway 5-2 and Canada won 8-0 over Switzerland.

    In the evening session China comfortably beat Sweden 9-4 and Canada thrashed Norway 10-1. A dramatic match between Slovakia and Finland ended 7-6 to the Slovaks.

    Hosts South Korea kept the home crowd on the edge of their seats as they narrowly beat the Neutral Paralympic Athlete delegation 6-5 in the final match of the night.
