"We can confidently say that this assistance will help move PNGPC to the next level.”

With less than 100 days to go until London 2012, the Papua New Guinea Paralympic Committee (PNGPC) has been given a timely boost thanks to financial support from its Government through the National Gaming Control Board.

The support of K300,000 (USD$150,000) was presented by the Prime Minister, Honourable Peter O’Neill under the Papua New Guinea Benefit Fund and will be used to assist the national team ahead of London 2012.

It will also be used to fund the Classification Course Stage 1 during the fifth PNG Games in Kokopo this year and Stage 2 during the 2013 Darwin Arafura Games.

The financial support will also further help the Papua New Guinea Paralympic Committee accomplish its four year Strategic Plan which was recently set up during a workshop at the National Sports Institute in Goroka. The plan includes the creation and development of pathways for athletes, coaches and classifiers as well as preparation towards the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Papua New Guinea Chef de Mission, Dr Kelu Ma said: “We are indebted to the Prime Minister, whilst at the same time humbled by this gesture. We can confidently say that this assistance will help move PNGPC to the next level.”

In recognizing the achievements of the PNGPC, the Prime Minister commented that PNGPC is the only sporting organization that has ever won a medal at the highest level of international events.

Prime Minister O’Neill paid tribute to Francis Kompaon, in achieving great success by winning silver at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and wished the team for London 2012 further success.
