Nottwil 2017: How will champions be crowned?

The world’s best young athletes descend on Nottwil, Switzerland this week for the first World Para Athletics Junior Championships. But deciding who will become world champion is about more than just who crosses the finish line first or throws the furthest.

The track and field events are being contested in two age categories (U18 and U20), and within the age groups the various disciplines are being run as multi-class events, where athletes in similar classes compete together.

The Raza Point System will therefore be used to decide the winners. It means points are awarded to each athlete according to their specific class and their final performance, similar to the system used at this year’s World Para Swimming World Series.

A mathematical formula is used to calculate the points to enable a direct comparison between athletes from different classes, and will help to decide which ones are crowned the first world junior champions.
