The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has opened nominations for the 2019 Paralympic Sports and Media Awards, as well as the BP Courage award, to recognise achievements from the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

This year’s accolades will be presented in Bonn, Germany, in October, to coincide with the IPC General Assembly.

    Sport

The Paralympic Sport Awards honour top athletes and officials, recognising their achievements from the most recent Games.

There are five award categories: Best Male Athlete, Best Female Athlete, Best Team Performance, Best Paralympic Games Debut and Exemplary Paralympic Games Official.

Previous winners include Italy’s Beatrice Vio, Iran’s Siamand Rahman, Cuba’s Omara Durand, Belgium’s Laurens Devos and Germany’s Anna Schaffelhuber.

    Media

The Media Awards are presented biennially in partnership with Allianz and were first held in 2005 to honour members of the international media for their coverage of the Paralympic Games.

They will recognise coverage of PyeongChang 2018 spanning three areas: broadcast (TV and/or radio), written (print and/or online) and photography.

Previous winners have included British broadcaster Channel 4, the New York Times, Marca, Bob Martin, BBC World Service and Yahoo! Japan.

    BP Courage

The biennial BP Courage Award will be given to an individual, team or organisation who have displayed immense courage at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. In 2017 the award was presented to Iraq’s Rio 2016 wheelchair fencing medallist Ammar Hadi for his perseverance despite personal challenges and adversity that the Iraqi conflict brought.

All IPC members, including National Paralympic Committees, Regional Organisations, International Federations and International Organisations of Sports for the Disabled are eligible to nominate for the respective awards.

Each organisation is entitled to submit one nomination per category and the closing date for entries is 12:00 CET on 1 February 2019.
