    1. Carlotta Gilli enjoys breakthrough Worlds

The 16-year-old had a glittering performance at her first World Championships, winning five golds and one silver, while setting a world record of 1:02.64 in the women’s 100m butterfly S12-13 and a Championships record of 27.03 in the 50m freestyle S13 along the way.

    2. Dias, Boki and Long deliver

All three swimming stars added plenty of golds to their medals haul. Brazilian Daniel Dias claimed five individual and one team relay titles in the S5 class, Belarus’ Ihar Boki sealed seven golds at a single World Championships for the first time in his successful career and USA’s Jessica Long won eight in the women’s S8 category.

    3. Refugee swimmer reaches the podium

Mohammad Abas Karimi, representing the Independent Paralympic Athletes Team, won silver in the men’s 50m butterfly S5, becoming the first refugee swimmer to win a World Championships medal. The Afghan-born athlete made his international debut earlier this year and now lives in the USA.

    4. Diego Lopez shines on home soil

The 23-year-old enjoyed the best performance of his life in front of his home fans as he took gold in the men’s 50m backstroke S3 with a Championships record of 46.38. Lopez also set an Americas record of 3:19.85 on his way to silver in the 200m freestyle S3 and added a second silver to his tally in the 50m freestyle.

    5. Kenya win medal on Worlds debut

Ann Wacuka took an historic bronze in the women’s 50m freestyle S8 to win Kenya’s first world medal. Mexico City 2017 was the first World Championships Kenya had competed in.
