Markus Salcher wins Europa Cup super-G26.03.2018
Austria’s double PyeongChang 2018 bronze medallist shines at Finals
Markus Salcher kicked off his quest for the World Para Alpine Skiing Europa Cup title with gold in the men’s super-G in Obersaxen, Switzerland, on day one of competition (26 March) at the Finals.
The Austrian, still fresh from claiming bronze in the downhill and super-G at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, is currently fourth in the overall rankings but has a good chance to take the title considering the top three are not competing in Obersaxen.
He was followed by Swiss skiers Robin Cuche and Thomas Pfyl, who took silver and bronze respectively.
Vancouver 2010 silver medallist Melania Corradini was the fastest in the women’s equivalent, ahead of Switzerland’s Bigna Schmidt and Spain’s Ursula Pueyo Marimon. The Italian has extended her dominance atop of the overall rankings and is a step closer to the Europa Cup title.
The women’s sitting was won by 26-year-old Ruth Hagspiel of Germany, followed by Frenchwoman Meije Bidault.
Switzerland’s two-time Paralympic champion Christoph Kunz took gold in the men’s sitting and continues leading the overall rankings. Czech Republic’s Pavel Bambousek and Kunz’s compatriot Murat Pelit completed the top-three.
In the men’s vision impaired, France’s Thomas Civade and guide Fabien Chambost came in first. Great Britain’s Michael Kear, guided by Louise Harrison, ended second.
The super-combined races will be decided on 27 March.
