Canada’s multiple world and Paralympic medallist Mark Arendz has been elected as the Athlete Representative on World Para Nordic Skiing’s Sport Technical Committee (STC).

The sprint and middle distance biathlon world champion received the most votes at a gathering of athletes in PyeongChang, South Korea. The elections took place at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games Test Event and World Cup.

Rob Walsh, Chairperson of the STC, opened the meeting before handing over to Arendz and South Korea’s Jeong Min Lee to put their cases for election to their athlete colleagues.

Arendz spoke about his aims to grow biathlon and cross-country skiing and increase the number of athletes.

Following the vote he will serve a two-year term, acting as liaison between the athletes and the STC, as well as a direct link to the International Paralympic Committee’s Athletes’ Council.

Arendz is the third winter sports athlete to be voted onto an STC, following the election of Australian alpine skier Mitchell Gourley and Dutch snowboarder Bibian Mentel-Spee onto the World Para Alpine and Snowboard committee earlier in 2017.

Nominations for World Para Ice Hockey’s Athlete Representative are currently open until 3 April.

The PyeongChang Nordic skiing World Cup concludes on Wednesday with the middle distance cross-country.

The World Cup Finals then take place in Saporro, Japan, from 18-22 March where overall winners in the men’s and women’s sitting, standing and visually impaired will be decided.
