With less than 50 days to go until the Opening Ceremony of the Parapan American Games on 23 August, the Lima 2019 Organising Committee and the National Society of Mining Petroleum and Energy (SNMPE) presented the medals that Para athletes will compete for.

The Parapans medals feature the Lima 2019 logo on the front side together with a design of a Quipu, a knot-record method used by Incas to keep records and spread information. Gold medals have one knot, silver medals two and bronze medals three. An image of Peru’s most important Inca sanctuary Pachacamac has been carved on the backside.

A total of 617 gold and silver, and 679 bronze medals will be up for grabs at the Parapan American Games.

Lima 2019 President Carlos Neuhaus said: “The medals have Peruvian minerals and we are happy the SNMPE accepted to fabricate them.

“We are proud to have the traditional Inca Quipu as one of the figures. We are ready to open the doors to all visitors. As we say here, here ´we all play´ and the SNMPE made the medals who will be a source of pride for all the winners.”

SNMPE President Manuel Fumagalli added: “We are happy to contribute to an event Peru stage with the medals. The winners will take a piece of Peru with them. The medals symbolise the direct and indirect work done by over 1.5 million Peruvians in formal mining.”

Lima 2019 will take place from 23 August to 1 September and will feature over 1,800 athletes competing across 17 sports, overtaking Toronto 2015 as the biggest Parapan American Games in history.

    Tickets can be purchased online.
