Singaporean Para cyclist Emily Lee hopes a continued cycling programme will be the key to unlocking her country’s hopes at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Games, following her successful Asian Para Games.

Lee won a bronze medal in the women’s B road race and finished fourth on the final day of Indonesia 2018 in the women’s B 1km time trial at the Jakarta International Velodrome.

“To go to Tokyo 2020 is just a wish. If we have a programme that helps us to train for our race I am sure we can be ready."

The fourth place was even more amazing given that Singapore lacks a velodrome for the team to train on.

Lee’s guide Sarah Tan said: “We are actually still quite new to track cycling because we don’t have a velodrome in Singapore so, what we do is actually just train on the roads and do a lot of endurance work.”

Lee said there was a big difference between track cycling and the road events.

“I would say track cycling is much more difficult as it requires a lot of techniques and mental preparation,” Lee said.

“I think we need to have more practice sessions on the track in order to be good.”

Lee dreams of reaching the Tokyo games in two years’ time.

“To go to Tokyo 2020 is just a wish. If we have a programme that helps us to train for our race I am sure we can be ready.

“In 2020, I don’t mind doing both track and road as well so we have more chances.”
