Hungary was the dominating country on the first day of the 2011 International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing European Championships yesterday (Wednesday 13 July) in Sheffield, Great Britain.

The spectators at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Sheffield saw Hungarian fencers take all four gold medals up for grasp in the Men’s and Women’s foil events. Categories A and B.

Zsuzsanna Krajnyak defeated France’s Sabrina Poignet in the final of the Women’s Foil Category A, leaving her with the silver medal. Evgeniya Sycheva from Russia won the bronze medal. In the Women’s Foil Category B, Gyongyi Dani won against her compatriot Judit Palfi to take home the gold medal. Germany’s Simone Briese-Baetke finished third.

The Men’s Foil Category A event saw another Hungarian-French final with Richard Osvath defeating Ludovic Lemoine. Andrii Demchuk of the Ukraine won the bronze medal. In Category B Hungarian legend Pal Szekeres defeated Francois Laurent (FRA) in the final. Laurent’s compatriot Alim Latreche finished third.

Between 13 and 19 July spectators will be able to watch Wheelchair and able-bodied Fencing action in what is the biggest Fencing event ever to take place in Great Britain.

More than 30 delegations have entered the event and 200 volunteers have registered to support the Local Organizing Committee. Tickets are still on sale and available for £5 (concessions) and £10 for adults. These tickets will give spectators access to both the qualifying hall and the finals. Tickets are available through the Ticket Office.
