Goalball Paralympic tournament format changes21.06.2016
The goalball competition format for Rio 2016 has changed to align with the one approved by the International Paralympic Committee.
The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball Committee announced changes to the goalball Rio 2016 competition format to align with the one approved by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
The updated rules state that the top four teams from each of the two pools in both the men’s and women’s competitions will play against each other in a single elimination format.
The group-winners will face the fourth placed teams and the runners-up will play against the third placed teams in the quarterfinals. The winners advance into the semi-finals and the losers are eliminated.
Subsequently, the gold and bronze-medal matches will be contested.
Prior to these changes, three teams from each pool would advance into the quarterfinals, with the group-winners qualifying directly for the semi-finals.
