From 22-24 May, 32 coaches and sport technicians from Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Peru and Nicaragua gathered in Lima for a technical course to introduce Para sports, with emphasis on Boccia, Para athletics, Para swimming and Para powerlifting.

The course is an initiative of the project En sus marcas, listos… Inclusión, delivered by the Agitos Foundation, together with the Inter-American Development Bank, the Colombian Presidential Agency for International Cooperation (APC-Colombia) and the Colombian Administrative Department of Sport, Recreation, Physical Activity an Effective use of Leisure Time (Coldeportes).

The aim of the project is to reinforce the national Paralympic structures in the five participant countries and regional integration, facilitating access of people with disabilities to practicing sport, and as a result, favour its social and economic inclusion.

During the course, coaches and sport technicians acquired knowledge about the Paralympic Movement, inclusion, the UN Convention of Rights of Persons with Disabilities, classification and eligibility in Para sport, among other subjects.

In the end, after conducting an analysis of the offer of Para sport activities in their communities, they have developed action plans.

Marlon Galeano, coach from Nicaragua, said:

“The knowledge we acquired during the course will strengthen our work. From now on, we will do a bigger promotion of Para sports, with better knowledge and with the perception that we can count on the support of the Agitos Foundation.

“We feel very committed to take this project to the deepest sites in our communitites, where people still don’t practice any sports.”

The next course of the project will take place in Guaranda, Ecuador, in September 2018.
