Wheelchair racer Jessica Lewis and boccia players Steve Wilson and Yushae Desilva-Andrade have arrived in Toronto and, standing at three strong, make up Bermuda’s biggest ever delegation for a Parapan American Games.

Around 1,600 athletes from 28 countries are in Toronto for the Games which open this Friday (7 August) including Bermuda who, back in 2011, were represented in Guadalajara, Mexico, solely by Lewis.

With the addition of Wilson and Desilva-Andrade for 2015, the Caribbean country has effectively tripled in size and is now seeking its first Parapan American medal.

Lewis, the first Bermudian sprinter to have competed at the Paralympics, will start competition on Wednesday (12 August) at the CIBC Pan/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium and will compete in the 100m, 400m and 800m T53 events.

Wilson (BC4) and Yushae Desilva-Andrade (BC2) will start competing in their respective events on Sunday (9 August) at the Abilities Centre.

“I am very excited. As I do not compete until Wednesday thus I am looking forward to watching the others compete,” Lewis said. “It is very important to be here and compete for Bermuda. Para-sport is not as big as in other countries, but it is growing very much”, she added.

Toronto 2015 is not Lewis’ first major event. She competed at the 2011 Parapans and at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

“Having those awesome experiences helps in order to keep calm while competing in front of a bigger crowd,” said Lewis, who has competed in a number of IPC Athletics Grand Prix events this year.

“Four years ago, when I competed in Guadalajara, I was the only Bermudian athlete. In Toronto, there are two others. It is great for Bermuda to see that para-sport is alive and it is important to bring awareness of it.”

She describes representing Bermuda as “an absolute privilege” and hopes “more athletes will join me at the Rio Paralympics,” an event she has already qualified for.

Desilva-Andrade is living a lifetime dream in Toronto 2015, her first Parapan American Games.

“It is amazing to be here. I want to represent my country the best I can and make them proud,” she said.

Even though she started competing just three years ago, she has improved really fast and is already planning even further. “Hopefully, I will make it to Rio next year.”

Boccia is not Desilva-Andrade’s only activity, she is also a computer graphic artist and recently designed Boccia Bermuda’s corporate identity.

“I design logos and brochures. It was hard to train and study at first, but I managed to do it in the end.”

Wilson is the third member of the Bermudian delegation. He is 67 years old and still keeps himself motivated to continue improving and competing.

“People cannot believe I am here and they tell me I am role model,” he assured.

“It feels so great to be here. Three years ago, I said ‘I want to get to the Parapan Am’. And here I am, fulfilling my dream.

“We need to get more people involved. We are three now at the Parapan Am, maybe we can get many more in the future.”

Troy Farnsworth is the Boccia Team Coach and a Paralympic driver in his country. “We want to educate the next generation and get the younger people involved in Paralympic sports. Spread the word. There are a lot of potential and talented people in Bermuda. It is up to us. Hopefully we can grow in other sports”, he said.

“Funding could be an obstacle but if you have people motivated, volunteers and the family’s support, anything can happen. To watch all these athletes competing is very inspirational and makes people get more interested in Paralympic sports.”

Bermuda’s Chef de Mission is Jessica Lewis’ mother, Lorri Lewis.

“It is a matter of awareness because unfortunately Bermuda is quite far behind with accessibility. But these athletes do amazing things and are so inspirational that we are confident we will achieve our goals.”

The Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games will take place between 7-15 August.

Equipo de Bermuda se triplica en tamaño para Toronto 2015

Tres atletas representarán a la pequeña nación caribeña en los Juegos Parapanamericanos que abrirán este viernes 7 de agosto.

La corredora en silla de ruedas Jessica Lewis y los jugadores de boccia Steve Wilson y Yushae Desilva-Andrade llegaron a Toronto, conformando así la delegación más grande de Bermuda en la historia de los Juegos Parapanamericanos.

Alrededor de 1600 atletas provenientes de 28 países están en Toronto para los Juegos, que abren este viernes 7 de agosto, incluida Bermuda que, en Guadalajara, México 2011 fue representada por Lewis en solitario.

Con la suma de Wilson y Desilva-Andrade para 2015, el país caribeño se ha triplicado en tamaño y ahora buscará su primera medalla parapanamericana.

Lewis, la primera velocista de Bermuda en haber competido en los Juegos Paralímpicos, empezará a competir el miércoles 12 de agosto en el CIBC Pan/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium y estará en los 100m, 400m y 800m T53.

Wilson (BC4) y Yushae Desilva-Andrade (BC2) tendrán su debut en sus respectivos eventos el domingo 9 de Agosto, en el Abilities Centre.

“Estoy muy excitada. Dado que no compito hasta el miércoles, estoy ansiosa por ver a los otros participar en los Juegos”, dijo Lewis. “Es muy importante estar aquí y competir por Bermuda. El para-deporte no es tan grande como en otros países, pero está creciendo mucho”, agregó.

Toronto 2015 no es el primer gran evento del que Lewis participa, sino que ya compitió en los Juegos Parapanamericanos Guadalajara 2011 y los Juegos Paralímpicos Londres 2012.

“El hecho de haber tenido esas grandes experiencias ayuda para mantenerse más calmada al momento de competir ante una multitud más grande”, dijo Lewis, quien compitió en un buen número de eventos IPC Atletismo Grand Prix este año.

“Cuatro años atrás, cuando competí en Guadalajara, era el único atleta de Bermuda. En Toronto habrá otros dos. Es genial para Bermuda ver que el para-deporte está vivo y es importante también que las personas tomen conocimiento de ello”.

Lewis describe representar a Bermuda como “un absoluto privilegio” y se ilusiona con que “más atletas se me unan en los Juegos Paralímpicos Río 2016”, evento al que ella ya clasificó.

Desilva-Andrade está viviendo un sueño en Toronto 2015, sus primeros Juegos Parapanamericanos.

“Es increíble estar aquí. Quiero representar a mi país lo mejor que puedo y generarles orgullo”, dijo.

Si bien comenzó a competir tan solo tres años atrás, mejoró rápidamente y ya tiene planes para su futuro. “Espero poder clasificar a Río”.

Boccia no es la única actividad de Desilva-Andrade, sino que también es diseñadora artística, siendo la creadora del logo oficial de Boccia Bermuda.

“Diseño logos y folletos. Fue difícil entrenar y estudiar al principio, pero pude hacerlo al final”.

Wilson es el tercer miembro de la delegación de Bermuda. Tiene 67 años y todavía se mantiene motivado para continuar mejorando y compitiendo.

“Las personas no pueden creer que esté acá y me dicen que soy un modelo a seguir”, aseguró.

“Se siente tan bien estar acá. Hace tres años, decía: ‘Quiero estar en los Parapanamericanos’. Y acá estoy, cumpliendo mi sueño”.

“Necesitamos tener más gente involucrada. Somos tres ahora en los Parapanamericanos, quizás podamos tener muchos más en el futuro”.

Troy Farnsworth es el entrenador del equipo de Boccia y un activo impulsor del deporte paralímpico en su país. “Tenemos que educar a la próxima generación y lograr que los más jóvenes se involucren en el deporte paralímpico. Difundir la palabra. Hay mucho potencial y muchas personas talentosas en Bermuda. Depende de nosotros. Esperamos poder crecer también en otros deportes”, dijo.

“El financiamiento puede ser un obstáculo, pero si tenés personas motivadas, voluntarios y el apoyo de la familia, cualquier cosa se puede lograr. Inspira ver a estos atletas compitiendo. Además, permiten que más personas se interesen en los deportes paralímpicos”.

La Jefa de Misión de Bermuda es la madre de Jessica Lewis, Lorri Lewis.

“Es un asunto de que las personas tomen conocimiento del tema. Desafortunadamente, Bermuda se encuentra un poco retrasada en materia de accesibilidad. Pero estos atletas hacen cosas estupendas e inspiran tanto que tenemos la confianza de que conseguiremos nuestros objetivos”.

Los Juegos Parapanamericanos Toronto 2015 tendrán lugar entre el 7 y el 15 de Agosto.
