Gustavo Fernandez confirmed his status as one of the world’s best players in 2018 by winning five titles and reaching the final of two Grand Slams – Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
The Argentinian made history in 2017 by becoming the first Latin American wheelchair tennis player to reach the world No.1 position in singles. He was also named ITF World Champion for the first time after finishing the year leading the rankings.
On his way to No. 1, the Argentinian won the Australian Open and advanced into the finals of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Fernandez won seven titles throughout the year.
He made his breakthrough as a 17-year-old when he won singles gold at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. He has since continued to battle at the top of the men’s tour.
In 2015, Fernandez recorded back-to-back Parapan Am Games singles golds and added the doubles gold to his collection alongside countryman Ezequiel Casco. Earlier in the year, he partnered Nicolas Peifer of France to claim the Wimbledon doubles title.
