    The competition

    The 2018 World Shooting Para Sport Championships will be held in Cheongju, South Korea, from 1-12 May.

    It will be the first chance for athletes to secure quota places for their countries for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

    Organised by CheongJu City in association with the Korean Shooting Federation for the Disabled, Cheongju 2018 will be the second time the World Championships have been hosted in South Korea.

    The 2002 edition was held in Seoul.

    Around 200 shooters from 40 countries are expected to compete.

    The venue

    The competition venue and related facilities for 2018 World Shooting Para Sport Championships is of the highest order to allow Athletes to perform their very best and officials to operate with absolute efficiency, and It will be with this in mind that the LOC will also address the issue of the construction or securing of competition sites and other facilities.

    All the preliminary and final Shooting Events will be held at the following venue, where the SIUS Electronic Scoring Target System is installed.

    History of the World Championships

    Suhl, Germany, 2014

    South Korea topped the medals table of the 2014 World Championships with 10 gold, three silver and four bronze medals. Five world records were broken in individual events as shooters went for qualification spots for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

    Top performers included South Korea’s Jinho Park, who set new marks in R1 and R3. Around 250 athletes from 45 countries enjoyed competing at the Schiesssportzentrum in the Thuringian Forest. They were welcomed by the local community, including the Mayor of Suhl, in a grand opening ceremony in the city centre that was open to the public.

    Zagreb, Croatia, 2010

    More than 240 athletes from 44 countries competed over ten days of competition in the Croatian capital. Organised by the Croatian Paralympic Committee, competitions took place at the Vrapanski Potok Shooting Range, totalling 31 medal events, including 17 individual and 14 team events.

    A total of nine world records were broken at the 2002 World Championships, four individual and five team. A total of 211 athletes from 36 countries gathered to compete with twenty nations leaving with at least one medal. China walked away with the glory of first place in the medals table with six gold, three silver and three bronze medals. Home nation Korea nearly finished joint first, just missing out by one bronze medal. Germany completed the top three.

    Linz, Austria, 1994

    The 1994 competition heralded the first World Championships under the stewardship of IPC Shooting. 147 athletes from 23 countries were keen to set the bar high and achieved a total of 22 world records, equally split across individual and team. Germany finished the competition with 19 medals, nearly half of which were gold. Sweden came second in the medals table with 14 medals and Denmark third with eight.
